SIR E.U
Washington, DC-based experimental rapper SIR E.U wants to infiltrate and destroy all spaces, reject all genres, and leave you speechless - hammer and microphone in hand.
Equally inspired by cinéma vérité as he is anime and Nicki Minaj, E.U has continued to antagonize and delight listeners with a collection of work that is chaotic, improvisational and has been critically acclaimed by Pitchfork, The Washington Post, The FADER and more. Whether solo or alongside contemporaries such as celebrated DC-based rap duo Model Home or experimental Techno producer Huerco S, E.U always finds himself at the cutting edge of eclectic sound.
Growing up as an Ivorian-American in Washington, DC, E.U immersed himself in pop music, the DC go-go scene and gospel bands - developing a wide musical vocabulary that would later inform his out-of-body, stream-of-consciousness approach to music and performance.
A competitive lyricist at heart, SIR E.U got his start as a teenager with the locally celebrated rap-duo Koolkluxklan, who enjoyed early success and became legends in the underground DC rap scene. The group’s ascent was tragically cut short when co-founder and close friend of E.U, Avionadramida, died of an epileptic seizure in 2012.
Devastated, E.U continued to use music to channel his many frustrations and emotions, adapting his style into a freer form and more confrontational version of his former self. Much like his musical hero MF DOOM before him, Sir E.U became something of a super-villain - challenging conventions of rap by-way of punk-driven left-field releases like African American Psycho and legendary performance art-style shows such as a limit-testing 25-hour endurance concert.
His latest work, I Will Never Let You go, takes his improvisational chaos in an exhilarating new direction. The album was recorded live in a podcast studio in the lobby of the LINE Hotel in Washington, DC -- a space founded by collaborator Jack Inslee, producer of two critically-acclaimed albums for indie-folk singer/songwriter Odetta Hartman. E.U improvised over beats by Wreck Tech & Jack Inslee - beats he'd never heard before - as Inslee processed vocal effects in real time. The sequence heard on the album is exactly as it was recorded.
The result is a cinematically satisfying, disorienting trip through SIR E.U's mind - a place where identity, diaspora, misogyny and disillusionment are questioned, explored and broken apart at the seams.
